The critical question you need to ask yourself everyday if you want to be successful is “Who am I benefiting or who’s problems am I solving and How?” To be truly successful you need to help more and more people. As Harv Eker says ”Entrepreneurs solve problems for a profit.”
I recently came across a client of mine who wanted me to do some strategic planning for her company. The first question I ask is what is the product or service. The next question I ask is who is benefiting and I then ask how is it benefiting them.
Most of the time, I get a cold stare. And, responses like I don’t know, I just want to make a lot of money. Every business is there to make a lot of money. But you won’t make a lot of money if you DO NOT solve problems for a lot of people.
This is not just applicable for entrepreneurs but it is applicable for every single person even if you are a janitor, waiter or receptionist. As a waiter, you are serving food for a group of people. This makes life easier and more comfortable for that group not to mention your boss can charge extra dollars to that group that in turn makes him rich and allows him to grow his restaurant into a bigger unit that serves even more people.
Every single person in every profession has to solve problems or benefit somebody. If he is not doing that, his job will sooner or later be discarded.
In the last few years there have been several layoffs in major corporations because many of the employees who were laid off were no longer benefiting or solving problems for their organizations.
Pick up a sheet of paper right now. At the top of the sheet, write down your job title, then write down what beneifit you provide and to who. Stick it on your wall at a place you can see clearly. Then ask yourself everyday, “how can I benefit more people” or if you are an employee “Ask yourself what can I do to solve more problems for my company or my boss?”
This exercise will dramatically change your perspective towards your job or your business.
Good luck!
