I was reading this blog post “Why are you single? Perhaps it’s the choice effect” on Tim Ferris’s blog where the writer spoke about choices being more harmful than helpful. Is it that some people are single because they have lot of choices?
It reminds me of my college days when I would have several ****** to choose from. And, eventually would end up with none because of so many other distractions.
What has this got to do with business?
When I started out in business, the same pattern started repeating itself. I just went ahead starting several businesses at the same time or jumping from business to business. 4 businesses in 6 years. Woah! That’s quite a record. Anything new was my thing. When the right thing to do was to start with one project, stay focused on it, complete it and then move on to the next.
I have become way smarter since then. I now focus on one business at a time and try to be the best I can be in it.
Today my strategy is,
#1 Focus on one business at a time.
Yes, sometimes I do experiment with trying a few new things. But I try to keep them under control and I am always aware that I am walking a very sensitive line.
#2 Focus on one goal at a time
You may write down a lot of goals. But pick your most important goal. This goal will most likely fulfill all your other goals. For example, you might have a goal to buy a huge mansion in Paris. And, your other goal could be to make an income of 100 million dollars. If you focus on making that 100 million dollars, many of your other goals might be fulfilled as well.
#3 Focus on one project at a time
Today, I focus on one project at a time, finish it and then move on to the next. There is no starting more than one project at a time.
I see so many people, they are running around trying to find new projects when they haven’t completed their existing projects. This is serious unproductivity.
Brian Tracy says “DO NOT start a task if you don’t plan on completing it.”
#4 One task in one time block
I set aside a certain amount of time to do one task and I focus on that one task during that time. For example, if I decide to write an article or a book from 10 am to 11 am, I only write my article during that time. I do nothing else. No emails, no phone calls, nothing just writing.
The next time you hear someone use the word “Serial Entrepreneur” smile and think Jumping Jack. You don’t want to be one of those. Instead, build one BIG business that fulfills your personal goals and gives you the lifestyle you crave for.
